Last week I started my summer internship with producer Brent Milligan. I have been following his work since Ridgely and feel fortunate to work under him. We setup in a cabin on Center Hill Lake to record a new album by Jared Anderson. Recording during the day and skiing on the lake in the afternoon …it was the perfect project to start. I went over to Brent’s yesterday to pick up my hard drive so I could start editing one of the songs. I also went to Westwood Studio in Nashville where Jamie Harvill was producing a rock album. I wanted to get familar with the facility since we will be tracking there next month on Jamie’s album. The busy summer has begun!

Droppin’ the Beat Old School…

Yesterday I got the chance to go into the studio and track drums with analog tape on this here Studer A827.
It was my first time to use tape in the recording process and I am very pleased with the results. The drummer for this session was Darren Foster who has done good work for me every time I have used him.

Darryl, as always, was a tremendous help. This is him thinking about how we could get a better kick sound. Don’t worry…we figured it out.

This is me feeling the beat…or constipated not sure and Tyler running the tape transport.

I also got to use one of the new additions to Studio B for a talkback. Do you remember this infamous(“more than famous”) tool for Duckhunt?

Here was the kick setup from the beginning of the session. We ended up replacing the Yamaha MZ204 inside the kick with an e604. That subkick Darren made from a Trace Elliot bass cab speaker cone and an old Pearl snare.

Darren broke a lug on one of his snares and this is us trying to fix it by committee.

I hope to let you hear these drums soon.
